29 digits enteredWhen to check an ISBN
ISBN check digits use different rules depending on whether the number is ISBN-10 or ISBN-13. This calculator helps catch number errors before a book barcode or catalog record is prepared.
Check ISBNs before cover proofing
A wrong ISBN digit can follow a book through many files.
- Use the publisher supplied ISBN as the source.
- Check ISBN 10 and ISBN 13 only when both are needed.
- Compare the final barcode value with the cover metadata.
For books in distribution, the assigned number matters as much as the math.
Calculate or validate an ISBN
- Enter 9 digits to calculate an ISBN-10 check digit.
- Enter a full ISBN-10 or ISBN-13 to validate the existing check digit.
- Compare the result with the publisher, catalog or book record.
- Fix any typo before generating ISBN barcode artwork.
- Check the printed barcode proof before approving a cover or catalog entry.

ISBN number checks
- ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 use different check digit rules.
- ISBN-10 check digits can be X, so do not remove it as if it were a typo.
- Use ISBN barcode generation after the identifier itself has been confirmed.
ISBN check digit mistakes to avoid
- Treating an ISBN check digit result as a new ISBN assignment.
- Removing an ISBN-10 X check digit because it doesn't look numeric.
- Copying an ISBN from an old draft instead of the final publisher record.
ISBN check digit questions
Can an ISBN-10 check digit be X?
Yes. ISBN-10 can use X as the check digit when the calculated value is 10.
Can this validate ISBN-13?
Yes. Enter the full 13-digit ISBN to validate its final check digit.
Does this assign an ISBN?
No. It only calculates or validates the check digit. ISBN assignment comes from the proper ISBN agency or publisher process.
Can I convert ISBN-10 to ISBN-13 here?
This calculator checks and calculates digits. If you need a full ISBN-10 to ISBN-13 conversion workflow, confirm the publisher record before using the result on a barcode.
Why can the ISBN-10 check digit be a letter?
ISBN-10 uses a modulo 11 formula, which can produce a remainder of 10. Since that does not fit in a single digit, the letter X is used to represent 10. It is not an error.
How do I convert an ISBN-10 to ISBN-13?
Drop the ISBN-10 check digit, add the prefix 978 to the front of the remaining 9 digits, then calculate a new check digit using the ISBN-13 (modulo 10) formula. ISBN-13 numbers starting with 979 do not have an ISBN-10 equivalent.
Does this tool register my book with an ISBN agency?
No. It only checks or calculates the check digit. To register a book, contact your national ISBN agency, such as Bowker in the US or Nielsen in the UK.
